What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a process by which a law enforcement agency compares its policies, procedures, and operations to established best-practice standards which are then evaluated and verified by the outside group that established the standards.  The law enforcement agency must be willing to undergo an intensive, systematic analysis of all of its operations, especially those in the high-liability areas such as prisoner detention and transport, evidence and property handling, and the use of force.

The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association developed the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Program 20 years ago.  The program currently requires compliance to 139 standards which are based on current best-practices, legal mandates, and case law.  The program is Pennsylvania specific and promotes a success-oriented outcome.

Making the decision to pursue accreditation for your agency is one of the most important decisions you can make.  Determining whether or not you can allot the necessary time and personnel to the process can be one of the major concerns.  Police Accreditation Services can provide you with the knowledge, experience, and staff to help you achieve accredited status through the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association within a reasonable time frame.
